The Governor of Jonglei State, Dr. Riek Gai Kok, has appointed the Chairperson of the Bor Community Youth Association in Juba, Counsel Kur Ayuen Kou, as the new Secretary General of the state government.

The appointment of Kur who is also known as Akur-Majeep was announced through a gubernatorial order issued on Wednesday.

He replaces former Secretary General Gatwech Koak Nyuon, who resigned on January 3, 2025, after serving for four years under Governors Denay Jock Chaggor and Majoub Biel Turuk.

Majeep will be deputized by Deng Monyjok Deng Aguer, who was appointed on the same day.

Additionally, Governor Gai made several other appointments, including the Commissioner of the Revenue Authority, the Director General in the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, and a Technical Advisor to the Governor on Special Programs.

The Governor was sworn in on March 10 after serving as a former national minister of health and a member of SPLM replaces Mahjoub Biel, a member of the National Democratic Movement (NDM), a critical part of the SSOA coalition.

While witnessing the swearing in, President Kiir Mayardit urged the newly appointed governor to prioritize tackling the key challenges in Jonglei.

Jonglei State has long been plagued by intercommunal violence, cattle raiding, and political tensions, making the new leadership’s task particularly challenging. The governor’s administration is expected to focus on overcoming these obstacles while fostering economic growth and promoting social cohesion in the state.

During the swearing-in ceremony, which took place at the Presidential Palace in Juba, Nyuol Justin Yaac was also sworn in as the chairperson of the Human Rights Commission and Ezekia Alfandi Gibson as his deputy.
