Local authorities in Alam Payam, located in the southern part of Pigi County, have raised alarms over a surge in cholera cases in the area.

According to Malith John, a health worker at a facility in Alam Payam, three people died last week and four others are currently in critical condition due to the disease.

He noted that the health center last received medical supplies from the government in 2024 and is now struggling to manage the growing number of cases.

‘’As it was posted on social media, there are many cases in Alam payam and since last year there was no proper respond for those cases and we are indeed suffering we have communicated with the county health department and forwarded to the commissioner but there is no response. CHD normally say they are going to see or handle that but up to now they have not done anything,’’ he stated.

He added that local authorities had reached out to the county health department for assistance, but their pleas have gone unanswered.

Malith urged the state ministry of health and humanitarian agencies to act swiftly to prevent more deaths.

He also advised residents to maintain proper hygiene and sanitation practices to avoid further spread of the disease.

However, Dr. James Biel Thon, Director of the Pigi County Health Department, disputed the reports, claiming there are no cholera cases in Alam Payam.

‘’We did not record any case currently from Alampayam. There are no cases under admission currently but only in Kowac and Wutlueth which are under Ater payam so those are the areas with cases of cholera,’’ he said.

He appealed to the SPLM-IO forces in some areas in Pigi to allow unhindered access for medical supplies, emphasizing the need for safe humanitarian passage to reach affected communities.

Last week, authorities in Pigi County reported three deaths including a 30 year old mother and 7 cases in Kowac Payam as a result of cholera.

According to the County Health Department (CHD, Pigi has recorded a total of 312 cholera cases and 11 deaths since the outbreak began in 2024.
