Police in Bor town have confirmed the arrest of four machetes wielding gang members following a violent altercation over the Easter weekend.

According to the state police spokesperson, First Lieutenant Akech Mapiou, the gang members were arrested near Park Palace Hotel while engaging in a fight involving panga.

He said two of the suspects sustained injuries and were taken to the Jonglei State Referral Hospital for treatment.

“Yesterday, some gang members were fighting using panga, but the police were present and intervened immediately. They were fighting in my presence, and we managed to arrest four of them. No civilians were hurt, only the suspects. An investigation has already been initiated,” Lt. Akech stated.

He also noted that Easter celebrations in Bor went smoothly, with Christians marching in peace and without any disruptions.

Lt. Akech urged the public to collaborate with the police by reporting any suspicious gang-related activities.

“Security is everyone’s responsibility not just the police or organized forces. Protect yourself, your family, and your neighbours by reporting any criminal activity before it escalates,” he said.

“You need to cooperate and provide timely information so that we can plan and respond appropriately. This is the best way to maintain a secure state where people can go about their daily activities without fear or intimidation. We have established police stations in different areas where cases can be reported,” he added.

Lt. Akech also called on the judiciary in Jonglei State to try gang members in the High Court instead of informal or town courts, which lack the authority to impose longer sentences.

“When gang members are tried in informal or town courts, they are often sentenced to a maximum of six months because those courts cannot hand down sentences exceeding two years. Using the High Court ensures more appropriate legal action against these gang members,” he highlighted.
