South Sudan People’s Defence Force has been accused by County officials of targeting two civilians vehicles in alleged bomb attacks in Akobo.
The Commissioner of Akobo County Puok Nyang Tutjiek reported that a gunship bombardment targeted two commercial vehicles travelling from Akobo West to Akobo East.
Puok said the incident happened on Tuesday afternoon at around 12:45 PM.
‘’Today we heard a sound of gunship bombing at the outskirts of Akobo town and when we rushed to the scene we discovered that the helicopter was bombing two vehicles coming from Akobo West to Akobo East.’’ He stated.
Commissioner Nyang stated that there were no casualties reported since the passengers jumped out of the vehicle and ran into hiding.
‘’It was our surprise because we did not know that there was any problem in Akobo County that should let the SSPDF and UPDF gunship to bomb Akobo County.’’ He added.
He said the incident caused panic among the people in Akobo and ran into hiding for their safety.
‘’The children were running. Some of them were running to the river and others were running to the bush with a lot of problems like abductors who sometimes abduct children. We don’t know if there might be children drown in the river.’’ He pointed out.
The commissioner added that he demands answers from the country’s top leaders on the bombing of his county.
He called on the people in Akobo County to be calm.
On Sunday, gunships bombarded Nasir of Upper Nile, killing 21 people.
The Western embassies in a joint statement Tuesday, offered to facilitate a direct dialogue between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Dr Riek Machar to discuss peaceful resolutions to the current security situation in the country.
The western embassies include; Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
